What do you need for equestrian sports?
Before choosing a horse, first take a look at the documents for the animal, which indicate data on age and health. As a rule, the horse has a breeding certificate and a passport. If there are no documents for the horse, then you will have to limit yourself to a visual check.
How to inspect the horse you would like to buy? Start at the head of the animal, then look at the back, rump, withers, and the rest of the horse’s body. If you do not like the seller, or for some reason you do not trust him, then it is better not to buy anything from such a person.
Many people know that the years of an animal can be seen in the teeth. But here, too, there are nuances, the teeth deteriorate faster if the horse has eaten hard or dirty food. Therefore, do not forget to look at what this animal is fed.
Looking at the horse’s eyes, you can draw a conclusion not only about health, but also about the nature of the pet. Please note that there are no thorns or any stains. If defects are found, keep in mind that this indicates poor vision, and the animal is likely to be restless and anxious.
Don’t forget about the hollows above the eyes. They are located between the frontal bone and cheekbone. The larger and deeper these depressions, the older the horse. Well, if the depressions are small – in front of you is a young horse.
As for the nose, large pink nostrils without any suppuration are a sign of health. The smell is just as important. If it is not very good, the animal may have problems. Swelling is also a negative sign.
By the ears, you can also judge the vision, and also the mood of the horse. Ears that are close to the head mean an aggressive attitude, especially if a grin is observed along with this, then you should not get closer, otherwise you can run into trouble.
What is the right way to look a horse in the mouth?
Let’s try to find out the age of a horse by looking at its teeth. Approach the side of the horse, firmly but gently take it by the head, and with the other hand, preferably the right, gently press the corner of the mouth to put your hand into its mouth, removing the tongue and examining the teeth.
When nothing remains of the tooth, you can still see a trace in its place, this trace will disappear no earlier than after seven years. But the shape in the form of an oval, on the rubbing part of the tooth, occurs only in horses that are more than 20 years old.
In addition, horses, like people, replace their milk teeth with molars. Each tooth has a cavity called a calyx. It should be about 5mm deep (lower jaw), and somewhere around 10-11mm in the upper jaw. Every year, this cup is erased by about a couple of millimeters, so in three years it will not be from below, and after – already on the upper teeth.
The ideal option is to purchase a horse from a proven supplier who can be trusted and whose reputation has already been verified more than once. For today many allow themselves to be deceived. In this case, you will not have to inspect the animal from head to toe, and there will be no problems with documents either.
