Austrian wildlife photographer Julian Rad filmed dramatic footage of an emotional duel between a group of European ground squirrels.
According to the photographer, he calmly filmed the life of gophers and suddenly found himself in the center of the battle
“There was so much action going on that I felt like I was in the middle of an action movie. Dust swirled all over the site, which was raised by fighting animals, and I heard their loud squeak.

For some reason not clear to the photographer, one of the gophers began to jump on the other, and then several more animals were involved in the fight. Gophers fought with their paws, jumped up and dodged all over. Used in the course and teeth. “Gophers live in large family groups and are usually very friendly to each other,” says Julian Rad, “But sometimes it comes to territorial showdowns, when representatives from different territories meet at the boundaries of the plots. Apparently, that’s exactly what happened.”

“I have never filmed a European gopher fight before, so I am very proud of these shots. I may be the only photographer to have captured them. Or one of the few. I was very lucky to capture these unique shots.”

The European or western or gray ground squirrel is a rodent of the gopher genus. It lives in Central and Eastern Europe and feeds mainly on plants, but often on bird eggs and insects. Like all ground squirrels, it digs holes and loves cereal crops, which is why it was previously considered a terrible agricultural pest. Now the species is protected in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Source
