Sennenhund coat care
The Sennenhund is one of the most beautiful and beloved dog breeds in the world. In our article we will talk about how to care for the coat of these beautiful pets.
To care for the coat of the Sennenhund, you will need a brush with natural bristles, a slicker brush, a comb with frequent (for short hair) or sparse (for long) metal teeth, a furminator, indispensable during shedding, and a brush handle. A mitt (or, as it is also called, a dog mitt) is very convenient for cleaning bends and troughs. It helps to cleanse the hair of dirt and remove dead hairs in a matter of minutes, and also has a massage effect and improves blood circulation.
Daily brushing
Remember that the more often you brush your dog, the better. Combing is not only a way to get rid of excess hair and maintain the beauty of the coat, but also a useful massage that improves blood circulation and a pleasant contact, during which the pet gets used to the owner’s touch and learns to trust him. In everyday life, you need to comb your pet at least 2 times a week, during molting – more often.
It is recommended to comb the dog as follows: 2-3 times with a slicker brush in the direction of hair growth, 1 time – against, then 2-3 times again along the coat, etc. In conclusion, we smooth the fur with a special mitt.
The tangles of the Longhair Mountain Dog are carefully untangled with your fingers and gently combed using a tangle spray. If the tangle cannot be untangled, you will have to use a tangle cutter or scissors.
Bathing
As needed, the dog should be bathed using special detergents (for example, Iv San Bernard, 1 All Systems, Bio-Groom, Oster, Wahl, 8 in 1). Since the sennenhund has a coarse guard hair and a thick undercoat, you will need not only shampoo, but also a balm for gentle care of the undercoat. After bathing, carefully comb the dried coat of the dog so that it acquires a well-groomed appearance. Stock up on suitable shampoos, conditioners and towels with good absorbency.
Dogs living outside the city are bathed much less frequently than dogs living in metropolitan areas. Unfavorable environmental factors in large cities contribute to the rapid contamination of the skin and wool, so it is recommended to bathe a four-legged resident of the metropolis at least once a month.
Molting
Shedding is a headache for almost all dog owners. Shedding of even short-haired breeds causes tangible inconvenience, which can be said about the owners of long thick wool. However, regular, thorough combing will help get rid of more of the excess hair that would otherwise inevitably grace all the upholstered furniture and clothes in your home.
The original furminator is very effective in the fight against shedding, which removes up to 90% of loose hair in one application. This tool has no analogues on the modern market, but, unfortunately, its effectiveness has contributed to the emergence of numerous fakes. So be careful with your choice!
And in preparing a dog for participation in an exhibition, you can’t do without the help of a groomer, because it’s not enough for your pet in the ring to be just well-groomed: he has to shine!
Take care of your pet and let him win new victories both in the show rings and in everyday life!
