Selection of behavior in dog training
Behavior selection is one way to train any animal, including dogs.
This method of training is also called “catching” or “free-shaping”. The point is that the trainer, when selecting behavior, positively reinforces (“selects”) the desired actions of the dog. At the same time, even complex skills can be taught to a dog if they are broken down into small steps and consistently reinforce each of them.
For example, you need to teach a dog to ring a bell. In this case, you will reinforce first looking at the bell, then moving in that direction, then touching the bell with your nose, and then pushing your nose that causes the ringing. You can also teach to touch the bell with your paw.
With the help of selection of behavior in dog training, it is possible to teach a pet not only species-specific (i.e., inherent in dogs by nature) reactions, but also skills that are unusual for the normal behavior of an animal. That is, almost everything that the dog is physically capable of.
