Character
The history of the formation of the Rhodesian Ridgeback began several hundred years ago, when the Hottentot tribe roamed across Africa. People were accompanied by faithful pets – semi-wild dogs, which were used for hunting and guarding. Part of the tribe settled in the southern territory of the continent. The first Dutch settlers arrived here in the 17th century. As a result of crossing European dogs and semi-wild relatives, the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed appeared. From African ancestors, she inherited ridge – wool on her back, growing in a different direction, and from European – innate nobility and intelligence.
Ridgebacks are hounds, and the second name of the breed speaks for itself – a lion dog. It was the representatives of this breed that participated in the hunt for large predators, including lions.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are devoted to the owner and are always ready to protect him. Even on a walk, they constantly monitor the situation and are ready to rush into battle at the slightest danger. These dogs are independent and self-confident. Their owner must be a person with a strong character, otherwise the pet will take on the role of the leader of the “pack”. For this reason, Rhodesian Ridgebacks need training and education from childhood. It is best to conduct training with a professional dog handler .
Behaviour
A well-bred Ridgeback is a great companion for active families. The dog has an affectionate nature and a high level of intelligence. The pet is indifferent to strangers and does not show aggression towards them, it is a fairly contact animal.
I must say that Rhodesian Ridgebacks, despite their stubbornness and external coldness, are actually quite sensitive and even touchy: they demand attention and, in case of its lack, can begin to be harmful.
The Ridgeback is tolerant of animals, although misunderstandings can sometimes occur. But if the dog ended up in a family where there are already pets, then be calm: it will surely be imbued with love and respect for older comrades. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is loyal to children and is able to tolerate almost all antics. But leaving an adult dog alone with the kids is still not recommended, because we must not forget about the hunting qualities of the dog.
Rhodesian Ridgeback Care
The Rhodesian Ridgeback does not require much care. His short coat should be wiped with a damp towel once a week to remove loose hairs. Bathe the dog infrequently, as it gets dirty.
Conditions of detention
The Rhodesian Ridgeback may live in a city apartment, but he will be truly happy in a private home. This energetic dog needs long and active walks, so open spaces, whether it be his own yard or field, are ideal for him. However, in the cold season, you need to take care of dog clothes : Ridgebacks are sensitive to low temperatures.
