Redheaded White-bellied Parrot

APPEARANCE

Short-tailed parrots with a body length of up to 24 cm and a weight of up to 170 gr. The color of the wings, back and tail is grassy green, the chest and belly are white. Neck, forehead and occiput yellow to tawny. Periorbital ring pinkish-white. The eyes are red-brown, the paws are pink-gray. The beak is powerful, flesh-colored. Juveniles are colored somewhat differently – on the red part of the head the feathers are dark, on the white belly there are blotches of yellow feathers, the paws are more gray, the iris is darker. An interesting fact is that under ultraviolet light, the plumage of the head and nape of these parrots glows. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed. Life expectancy is 25-40 years.

HABITAT AND LIFE IN NATURE

It lives in the northeast of Brazil, in Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. The species is fairly common in protected areas. The species has 3 subspecies, differing in color elements. Prefer tropical forests, often keep near the water. Usually keep to the crowns of trees. They are found in small flocks of up to 30 individuals, sometimes in company with other types of parrots. They feed mainly on seeds, fruits and berries. Sometimes agricultural land is damaged.

BREEDING

The nesting season begins in January. They nest in hollows, usually 2-4 eggs per clutch. The incubation period is 25 days, only the female incubates the clutch. The male can replace her for a while. At the age of 10 weeks, the chicks become independent and leave the nest. Parents feed them for a while.
