Puppy training mistakes
Sometimes owners complain that nothing comes of training a puppy: the pet refuses to obey, and sometimes starts to behave even worse. This is due to the fact that the owners make a number of mistakes. What are the mistakes in puppy training and how to avoid them?
Top 10 puppy training mistakes
There are 10 major mistakes in puppy training that prevent success. Here they are.
- You scold the puppy. Scolding and punishment does not teach the dog to behave correctly, and the motivation for “bad” deeds does not disappear anywhere. And one of the tasks of training is to teach the dog to get what he wants in an acceptable way. Instead of scolding your puppy, teach him to behave correctly – in humane ways, with the help of positive reinforcement.
- You are ignoring the puppy. Ignoring is a serious punishment for a pet, but it does not explain to him where he went wrong and what behavior was right. The output is the same as in the previous case.
- You think the puppy was born knowing your rules of life. You may be surprised, but dogs are completely unaware of what rules exist in our society. Moreover, each owner has his own rules. Dogs, of course, are excellent communicators, able to learn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but they learn exactly what you taught them.
- Constantly repeat “Fu” and “No.” We return to the first two points again: prohibitions do not teach the dog how to behave.
- You punish the puppy for bad behavior, while at the same time taking the right behavior for granted. The right approach is just the opposite: right actions are rewarded. After all, exactly what is encouraged is repeated more and more often.
- You put off training until later. It is necessary to train a puppy from the first day of appearance in your house. And no, you will not deprive your pet of childhood. Effective training is fun and in the game, and enjoy both the owner and the pet.
- You teach the dog “bad”. We have already written in detail about how this happens. It is extremely important to monitor yourself and analyze what kind of actions you encourage the puppy.
- You reward the dog at the wrong time. As a result, the puppy does not understand exactly what actions you are “buying”, and therefore cannot learn how to behave correctly.
- The puppy does not know that your praise is praise. Yes, yes, your mean “Well done” and a pat on the head may not be perceived by the puppy as a reward at all.
- You are choosing the wrong promotion. We have already written about this more than once. Reward – what the dog wants at this particular moment. And if a puppy wants to play, a piece of dry food will not at all inspire him to exploits.
