Puppy feeding scheme
The health and well-being of the dog throughout life largely depends on the correct feeding of the puppy. What is the correct feeding schedule for puppies?
The puppy feeding schedule includes the frequency and mode of feeding.
The minimum feeding frequency changes as the puppy matures. If the baby is less than 4 months old, it must be fed at least 4 times a day. From 4 to 6 months, the minimum frequency of feeding is 3 times a day. When the pet is older than 6 months, you can switch to feeding 2 times a day. Although it is desirable, of course, to keep three meals a day, at least up to 9 months, if possible.
As for the method of feeding a puppy, there are several of them.
- Puppies have free access to food. In this case, they do not starve, but, on the other hand, you do not know how much the puppy eats and, in principle, you can hardly control his appetite. In addition, in this case, there is a high risk of developing obesity and disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
- You give a limited amount of food divided into portions. In this case, you can control the feeding rate, but you must calculate it correctly so that the puppy does not starve or overeat. Also in this case, you can understand if the puppy’s appetite has changed, and control the weight gain.
- You give your puppy unlimited access to food for a limited time. In this case, you understand how the pet’s appetite changes, but you cannot determine the exact amount of food that the baby eats. Also in this option, as in the first, there is a high risk of obesity and related diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
Based on the foregoing, we can say that the optimal scheme for feeding puppies is as follows: you accurately measure the daily food intake and divide it into 2-4 servings (the number of servings depends on the age of the puppy).
