Inexperienced owners of decorative dogs often find themselves unprepared for such an event as the birth of a pet. Pregnancy and the birth of puppies is, of course, a wonderful period in the life of a dog and its owners. But in order for it to be comfortable and safe, it is important to know the features of keeping, feeding and caring for your pet.

Dogs belonging to small breeds are very funny and cute animals that require no less care and attention than large dogs. How long does pregnancy last for small breed dogs?

In dogs of small breeds, pregnancy proceeds in the same way as in other dogs, that is, from 58 to 65 days. A veterinarian can tell you a more accurate time after examining the animal (including using ultrasound), if you indicate the exact date of mating. 

Features of pregnancy and childbirth

For the pregnancy of the pet, the owners should prepare even before mating. It is important that the dog is completely healthy. During pregnancy, she will need nutritious and high-quality nutrition that will help support her health and the health of future babies.  

By the second, the dog may become less active, her stomach is rounded and the mammary glands swell. Your pet will likely need more frequent walks or diaper changes. 

Starting from the 56th day of pregnancy, the owner must observe the behavior of the pet and be with her. With the approach of the day of birth, the dog begins to “make a nest” for future puppies. A couple of days before the event, it should be gently washed with warm water. For long-haired dogs, it is better to cut the hair around the nipples.  

Signs of approaching childbirth are usually not confused with anything: the dog’s stomach drops, she shows anxiety, breathes noisily, looks for a secluded place, refuses to eat. By this time, clean diapers, a sheet, napkins, threads and scissors, cotton pads, a box and a heating pad for babies should be prepared. Right in front of them, the waters break and the birth of puppies begins, which can take place during the day. Each newborn puppy needs to be wiped, weighed, allowed to be licked by mom and placed on the nipple. As a rule, childbirth in small dogs takes place without complications, but you should never neglect the help of veterinary specialists.  

Some dogs may require a caesarean section, so if you are in doubt about your ability to deliver a dog, or if you are experiencing anxiety symptoms in your pet, be sure to visit your veterinarian.

If you do not plan the next offspring, it is best to spay the dog after a certain time on the recommendation of a veterinarian.
