The fish of this group belong to the family Zenarchopteridae, which in everyday life is translated as half-nosed. The name indicates a characteristic feature – the difference in length between the lower and upper jaws. The mouth itself is rather narrow and long, in some species it resembles a beak. Such a structure is designed to capture food from the surface of the water.

When keeping Half-Snouts, the following must be taken into account: they live only in the upper layer of water and tend to jump out of the aquarium, they are sensitive to water quality, they need food rich in protein, and males are intolerant of each other. Otherwise, they will not cause much trouble even for a novice aquarist.
Breeding is simple, as in other viviparous species. The fry are born fully formed and immediately ready to take food of the right size. However, stressful situations for females, poor nutrition will negatively affect the offspring. Another important point is that spawning should occur at low water levels. When the fry first emerge, they may sink to the bottom in an attempt to rise to the surface and stay close to the surface. If the depth is more than 15 cm, then the water pressure can damage the dress bubble
