Pecilia
Aquarium Fish Species

Pecilia

Pecilia, or Xiphophorus, belong to the genus Xiphophorus, family Poeciliidae. Previously, in the first half of the 20th century, the fish belonged to a separate genus Platypoecilus (now abolished), from which they inherited the second name – Platypoecilia, and in English-speaking countries they are still referred to as Platy.

Although there is a huge variety of Pecilia in modern aquariums, they are all breeding varieties of only two species – Pecilia maculatus (Xiphophorus maculatus) and Pecilia variatus (Xiphophorus variatus). There are also several hybrids with Swordsmen, the most famous of them are High Placilia and Flag Placilia.

For a long time, selection work and hybridization was the prerogative of professionals from Europe, but to date, specialists from Asian countries have been most active. It is from there that the main stream of new breeds and color variations comes.

Regardless of their origin, all supplied fish, as a rule, are unpretentious and easy to keep (able to live in various conditions). Compatible with most other peaceful species. Easy to breed. All of these combined make them a good choice for the beginner aquarist. It is with Pecilia and other related species (Guppies, Swordtails) that it is recommended to start your acquaintance with the world of aquariums.
