Old dog training
Older dogs are less flexible than younger dogs and have a harder time changing habits and learning new things. However, it is still possible to train old dogs.
Rules for training old dogs
- Monitor the condition of the dog, do not overload it. If you see that the pet is tired or not feeling well, the lesson should be stopped.
- Remember that older dogs take longer to learn commands. Give her that time.
- Explain new things to an older dog gently, without being overbearing.
- Think about what you are teaching the dog. Start from the physical capabilities of the pet. Not all tricks available to young dogs can be performed by older ones.
- Keep in mind that the old dog has accumulated a huge amount of life experience, and it is not always known whether it was positive or negative. So it is impossible to exclude the protest of the dog during training.
- Train an older dog in short blocks several times a day.
Otherwise, training an old dog is no different from training a young one. So, contrary to the saying, it is quite possible to teach an old dog new tricks.
