Description
Adult individuals reach a length of up to 3 cm. Sexual dimorphism is weakly expressed. Males differ from females in having an enlarged anal fin, otherwise they are almost identical. Color gray or silver. The body pattern consists of two dark stripes stretching from head to tail. The top stripe may be less pronounced.
Food
An omnivorous species, in the home aquarium it will accept a variety of appropriately sized foods designed for aquarium fish, dry, frozen or live.
Maintenance and care, arrangement of the aquarium
The optimal size of an aquarium for a flock of 10 fish starts at 40 liters. In the design, it is recommended to use a lot of aquatic plants, natural or artificial branches, tree roots and other natural decor.
An additional, but not obligatory design element is the leaves of some trees, which cover the bottom of the aquarium. In the process of their decomposition, processes similar to those that occur in nature occur – tannins are released, giving the water a characteristic chemical composition and coloring it brown.
Since Nannostomus bilane originate from water bodies with a sluggish current, they cannot be placed in an environment with strong water flows. As a rule, the main cause of internal flow is the operation of the filtration system. When choosing a filter, you should choose the model that causes the least movement of water, but at the same time provides the necessary cleaning. In some cases, a simple airlift filter is sufficient.
Behavior and Compatibility
A peaceful sociable fish that can keep company with other species of similar size and temperament. Although the Nannostomus tend to stay in a group, they are not schooling fish, as the males compete with each other for the attention of the females. Being together is an instinctive way of protection for such small creatures. It is desirable to maintain a group size of at least 10 individuals.
Breeding / breeding
Due to the low prevalence of this species in the amateur aquarium hobby, at the time of writing, there is no reliable information about their successful breeding in the home aquarium.
Fish diseases
Health problems arise only in case of injuries or when kept in unsuitable conditions, which depresses the immune system and, as a result, provokes the occurrence of any disease. In the event of the appearance of the first symptoms, first of all, it is necessary to check the water for the excess of certain indicators or the presence of dangerous concentrations of toxic substances (nitrites, nitrates, ammonium, etc.). If deviations are found, bring all values back to normal and only then proceed with treatment. Read more about symptoms and treatments in the Aquarium Fish Diseases section.
