Marsilia australis
Types of Aquarium Plants

Marsilia australis

Marsilia angustifolia or Marsilia australis, scientific name Marsilea angustifolia. As the name implies, the plant comes from the Australian continent. The natural habitat extends along the northern and eastern coasts, from the state of the Northern Territories along Queensland to Victoria. Occurs in shallow water and on wet, flooded substrates.

Marsilia australis

Belongs to the genus of ferns Marsilia (Marsilea spp.). In favorable conditions, it grows over the entire free surface of the soil, forming a continuous green “carpet”. Depending on the specific growth conditions, it can form sprouts with one leaflet on a short stalk, resembling Glossostigma outwardly, or develop two, three or four leaf blades. Each sprout usually grows up to 2-10 cm, from which numerous side shoots diverge.

Healthy growth will require warm, soft water, nutrient-rich soil, it is advisable to use special granular aquarium soil, and a high level of lighting. In aquariums it is used in the foreground and in open areas. It is not recommended to plant in the shade of other larger plants.
