Types of Aquarium Plants

Littorella

Littorella, scientific name Littorella uniflora. The plant is originally from Europe, but has recently spread to other continents, in particular to North America. In the wild, apparently, it came from home aquariums. In its natural environment, it grows on sandbanks along the banks of lakes, backwaters of rivers.

The sprouts form short (2–5 cm in height) “fleshy” needle-shaped leaves up to 3 mm thick. The leaves are collected in a rosette, the stem is absent. In the aquarium, each outlet is planted separately at a distance of several centimeters from each other. The plant reproduces by the formation of numerous lateral shoots on long arrows, which, in the process of growth, will quickly fill the free areas of the soil.

It is considered a difficult plant to grow. Needs nutritious soil and a high level of lighting. Even in the right environment, growth rates are very low. The small size and need for bright light limits the use of Littorella in large tanks and its combination with other plant species.
