The Lionhead Goldfish has special growths on its head that form a kind of mane. The number of growths is different for each fish and is not a prerequisite. Some individuals remain without a “mane” at all, while in others they grow so much that they close their eyes, nostrils, and mouth.

Outwardly, it is very similar to Ranchu, a Japanese ornamental fish. The same rounded short body shape and growths on the head, however, the Lionhead differs in the shape of the caudal fin, it is more like the tail of a Nymph. These goldfish are available in different colors: red, orange, chocolate, blue, black. Also with a combination of several colors: red with white, black with white.

It is considered a rather delicate fish and is not recommended for beginner aquarists. Fish require special design of the aquarium, it should not contain objects with sharp edges, notches. In addition, you should carefully consider the choice of neighbors. Fast active fish will win the competition for food and the Lionhead, due to its slowness, may experience hunger, and growths that can interfere with swallowing pieces of food add problems. The best is a species aquarium with one or more fish.
