labyrinth fish
Labyrinth fish as aquarium species are mainly represented by Gourami and Cockerels, natives of Southeast Asia and Africa. In the wild, they are found in shallow and rather muddy reservoirs – wetlands of rivers, backwaters and lakes, more reminiscent of large puddles. The tropical sun, lack of flow and a large amount of organic matter (leaves, branches, fruits) lead to a decrease in oxygen dissolved in water. In order to survive in such conditions, fish evolved a special labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly, supplementing the meager amount of oxygen produced through the gills.
The labyrinth organ is located on both sides of the head next to the gills and in shape resembles a small bag densely permeated with capillaries, like a blood labyrinth. Such a unique structure of this organ and its presence in a large group of species allowed researchers to generalize them and give the name Labyrinths.
Almost all species of this group of fish have well-developed parental instincts. During the mating season, males build special air-foam nests among clusters of floating plants with the help of air bubbles and mucus. Later, eggs are placed in them. As for behavior, they are considered relatively peaceful fish, with the exception of the spawning state, when males can be aggressive.
