Kennel cough in dogs
Many owners have heard of such a disease as “kennel cough”. The disease is caused by viruses and bacteria that affect the upper respiratory tract.
As a rule, dogs are infected with kennel cough from each other. Infection can occur at a distance of up to 2 meters.
The main symptoms of kennel cough are sneezing and coughing.

Who is most at risk for kennel cough?
- Puppies and older dogs.
- A healthy dog that has been taken out for unusually long walks by its owner (e.g. usually walks 15 minutes a day but decides to go for a two hour walk).
- Participants of exhibitions, trainings, competitions.
- Dogs in kennels.
- Dogs on overexposure and in pet hotels.
How to treat kennel cough in dogs?
- Symptomatic treatment.
- The antibiotic is used only when necessary. Moreover, in the first days of illness, if the dog has a good appetite, the use of an antibiotic is not recommended. Many dogs recover without antibiotics.
How to prevent kennel cough in dogs?
- Vaccinate the dog. Puppies can be vaccinated from 1 month old. Vaccination is carried out once a year. The vaccine does not guarantee against infection, but reduces the severity of the condition and shortens the time of illness.
- Avoid contact with obviously contagious dogs.
- Stop group activities if one of the dogs sneezes or coughs.
