Keeping a ferret at home
For keeping a ferret at home, it is important to remember that these are predators, successful hunters of rodents and birds. And the conditions of detention for ferrets need appropriate.
What to consider when keeping a ferret at home
First of all, take laudatory reviews about the ease of keeping ferrets at home with a fair amount of skepticism. A ferret is not a dog or a cat, it will never be a comfortable pet and will not give up the habits of a predator.
In addition, ferrets are extremely intelligent creatures. It is interesting to keep them, but this quality can also create difficulties.
Before getting a ferret, consider where it will live and whether it will be able to move freely.
Think safety. Ferrets love to crawl into holes, so the various gaps between the wall and furniture and other nooks are extremely attractive to them. The animal can climb up there, fail to get out and suffer, or even die.
Be sure to tightly close doors and windows – a ferret can seep even into a narrow gap, and a mosquito net cannot stop it.
Ferrets are very active and mobile, so when keeping a ferret at home, think about where the animal can run freely. But at the same time, the ferret is quite capable of trying things that you think are not very suitable for this, such as shoes or furniture.
By the way, indoor plants in the same room with a ferret do not survive.
And it is better not to let the ferret into the kitchen – there he can easily get hurt or jump on a burning stove.
Ferrets are quite clean, they can be litter trained, but keep in mind that they have a specific smell.
Cage for keeping a ferret at home
Many owners, unable to provide a safe environment for the ferret, prefer to keep the animals in cages. But the dimensions of the cage must be sufficient for the ferret to run: 1 square meter is the minimum.
The cage must be equipped with:
- small house
- Bowls for food and water
- Tray.
The ferret house should be like a hole so that the ferret can hide if he wants. It’s great if you can equip a labyrinth there. But at the same time, the dimensions should be sufficient for the ferret to easily turn around.
Even if the cage is spacious enough, when keeping a ferret at home, he should be able to make a daily “promenade” around the room – at least 2 hours a day.
Ferrets are very sociable animals that love to play and interact with other living things. And if you do not have the opportunity to devote enough time to your pet, it is better to take a couple of animals. Lack of attention and movement can lead to ferret illness.
