Is your cat gaining weight?
Many owners become worried when they notice that their cat is gaining weight. Spayed cats need a third less food than before spaying and can quickly gain weight if you don’t keep an eye on them, which is a real risk to their health.
Why is being overweight a problem?
Many different diseases are found more often in overweight cats. Unfortunately, such animals feel less comfortable and not as satisfied with life. The following are some of the more common problems that are common in overweight cats:
· Diabetes
Arthritis
skin diseases
Diseases of the urinary tract
Heart dysfunction
Increased risk of developing cancer
Among cats older than 7 years, the risk of death in cats with overweight is almost 3 times higher than in animals with normal weight.
Here’s why it’s so important:
1. Keep Your Cat Slim
2. Help your pet lose weight if it is already overweight.
How can I tell if my cat is overweight?
Examine your cat as follows:
Lower abdomen and area between the hind legs – is there an “apron” or “roll” of fat?
Feel the body along the ribs – can you feel them when you gently press with your palm, as if patting it? If not, the body fat may be too high.
Top – Refer to the Physical Assessment Card below.
Why is my cat overweight?
Most cats are overweight due to overfeeding, and it’s not hard to see why this is happening. We quickly realize how happy our pet is with some treat or new food.
However, if you want to keep your cat in good shape, you will have to train her to eat less food. And you can compensate for this with additional attention and affection.
A few tips
Your veterinarian is best at developing a feeding regimen for an overweight cat, but the following tips also work well:
The cat should be fed several times a day in small portions. If you are often away from home, try using a ball with food hidden inside or an automatic feeder.
· If your cat asks for extra food, instead of giving in to her, pet her and give her attention.
Be sure to set aside time to play with your cat every day – buy her new toys or just use a paper ball
Buy a tall scratching post so your cat can climb
· Consider getting a kitten to accompany your cat. Talk to your veterinarian about which breed to choose.
· Be careful with treats for cats – they contain a lot of calories.
·Consult your veterinarian about your pet’s weight management diet.
Your veterinarian can help determine if your cat is overweight and recommend steps to take to keep your pet healthy and happy.
