Iris
Aquarium Fish Species

Iris

A relatively new group of fish in the aquarium hobby, acquired only with 1950-x years, while most species became available only with 80-x. Rainbowfish live on isolated islands and archipelagos of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as Australia. Currently, most of the commercial species are bred on fish farms for commercial purposes. They are not exported from the wild, largely due to successful captive breeding and the difficulties of transporting them from remote regions, and in many habitats they are on the verge of extinction.

Irises are distinguished by their bright coloration and unusual, sometimes bizarre, shape of the body and fins. A characteristic feature of the representatives of this group of fish is a forked dorsal fin, with a noticeable gap between its two parts. Rainbows owe their popularity not only to their colorful coloring, but also to their ease of maintenance and the ability to keep them together with many popular types of fish.
