Hypancistrus Monte Dorado

Hypancistrus Monte Durado, scientific name Hypancistrus sp. L 411, belongs to the family Loricariidae (Mail catfish). The catfish is native to South America. It is predominantly found in the basin of the Rio Jari, one of the many tributaries of the Amazon. The river is a natural border between the two Brazilian states of Para and Amapa. The fish is named after the small town of Monte Dorado, located on the Zhari River, where the main catch of this species for export takes place.

Description

Adult individuals reach a length of about 13 cm. Outwardly, it is very similar to another related species – Painted Plecostomus (Hypancistrus sp. L260). At a young age, both fish are almost identical. As you get older, some differences begin to appear. In Hypancistrus Monte Durado, the body pattern has even black and white lines, while the light stripes are somewhat wider than the dark ones. In addition, over time, the color becomes less contrasting, the fish can become almost completely gray.

Behavior and Compatibility

Considered to be a calm, unassuming fish that needs places to hide. Should not be kept in a place with large, aggressive and territorial species. Small Tetras, Corydoras catfish and other similar fish will become good neighbors in the aquarium.

Maintenance and care, arrangement of the aquarium

The fish has a relatively modest size and leads a sedentary lifestyle, so an aquarium of 70–80 liters will be enough for one catfish. For 3-4 fish, you will need a tank of 200 liters or more.

The design must have shelters made of snags, heaps of stones and other natural or artificial elements. The fish are not prone to damage aquatic plants and they can be used in aquarium decoration. The rest of the design is arbitrary.

The fish prefers warm, soft, slightly acidic water and subdued lighting levels.

Food

Protein-rich foods should be the basis of the diet. It can be dry, frozen or live (bloodworm, brine shrimp) products.
