How to tame a budgerigar
To tame a budgerigar, you need, first of all, to become a friend for him. The trust of a bird is the most valuable thing in your relationship with it. It is the foundation for future joint games, a thread in communication and understanding of each other. The mutual desire to spend time together will help your friendship develop and teach the parrot new tricks and words.
Before starting taming, you need to take into account several factors: the age of the bird, gender, its state of health and the conditions of its maintenance before, the nature and behavioral reactions of the pet. All this to a certain extent will affect the speed of taming, the younger the parrot, the more likely it is that the bird will get used to the hands quickly. Consider first how to properly tame a young budgerigar, up to two months old.
Domestication of young budgerigars
Looking at a new family member, such a question as to tame a budgerigar to the hands arises for everyone. In this matter, it is better not to rush, do not forget that at first the bird is under stress, and you will not be able to analyze and understand the nature of your pet, its preferences and evaluate behavior. The bird is shy and stiff, so at this moment the further relationship between you depends on you.
It is worth recalling that there are no special secret methods for taming, you just follow the steps that need to be done in the first days of a parrot in the house. For about a week, try to approach the cage only to change water and food. When you see that the parrot is eating calmly in your presence, cleaning its feathers and has begun to be interested in what is happening outside the cage, then you should proceed to the next stage of taming.
Speaking calmly and affectionately, offer the bird a treat through the bars of the cage, after such contact, after a while it will be possible to open the cage door and bring the grains in the palm of your hand. Movements must be smooth, do not raise your voice. The norm of the daily diet of a parrot is 2-3 teaspoons of the grain mixture, you can remove the feeder at night, and offer breakfast in the palm of your hand in the morning. Having found out the taste preferences of the bird, offer his favorite delicacy from your hand.
You can tame a budgerigar to your hands using a stick from a sushi set, for convenience, take an ordinary brush or a pointer of a similar size. Dip the tip of the stick into the water and slowly bring it to the parrot and offer a drop of water, in the same way, dip the moistened stick into the grain and try to feed the chick. In the future, using an object already familiar to your parrot, you can lure the baby to your hand. This method is not suitable for everyone, but every owner can try.
By playing with a bell, a ball, those toys that your budgerigar likes, you show that there is no threat from your hands. The parrot, gradually eating a treat or grain from your hands, pushing a ball or a bell with you, will get used to you. And, one day, a bird will sit on your arm just to chat. At this point, you can slowly take the parrot out of the cage and bring it to the roof of the dwelling or to a nearby playground. Participate with him in exploring new toys and climbing spots.
Trusting a person, the birds often lose their vigilance, so only you can protect the budgerigar from threats. By showing the bird something exciting and interesting, you will convince him that it is safe with you and that there is no need to be afraid.
When you start letting the budgerigar out for a walk, offer him a palm, the bird will gradually begin to land on your hand, then on your shoulder, and soon you will hear a happy chirping in your ear.
You will be able to quickly tame a budgerigar only if you have purchased a bird from a breeder or a person who is able to devote time to each of his pets. The sale of tamed parrots is widespread, and when buying, you need to correctly conduct the first acquaintance with the pet and show that you are a friend and can be trusted.
Of course, there will always be exceptions to the rules, and taming a budgerigar in your hands is a process that does not tolerate haste and noise. If you behave correctly with a bird from its first days in the house, and your pet is young and unintelligent, then the taming procedure will pass as quickly as possible.
Can an adult parrot be tamed?
When an adult budgerigar got into your house, taming can be delayed indefinitely. You should be patient and find out as much as possible the circumstances of your pet’s former life. In addition to the formed character, an adult bird may have accumulated experience in living or communicating with people and developed a demeanor under certain circumstances.
If, when trying to establish contact with a bird, it begins to thrash about and scream, try to slowly move away from the cage or, if your hand is inside the bird’s housing, it is best to freeze. Be sure to remember to speak calmly and affectionately, do not make loud noises or make sudden movements. In principle, your behavior should be the same as in the standard conditions for taming a budgerigar, with a caveat to the duration of the process. It may take your adult parrot weeks to learn to eat calmly in your presence.
There are no particular difficulties in taming female budgerigars, the decisive factor is the age of the female, living conditions before purchase and her character. Even talking can be taught, the only thing is that females learn a little longer.
Having bought a pair of budgerigars, you need to endure a 40-day quarantine, the birds must be in different cages and in different rooms. During this time, you can safely do taming separately, and when the parrots live in the same cage, the more tamed by its behavior will set an example for the second. Regular exercise and hand-feeding will pay off. The process of taming a pair of budgerigars is a little complicated, as the birds focus on each other, it is easier for them to communicate with their own kind and you need to make every effort to make the bird make contact.
Taming a budgerigar, start by choosing a place where you will buy a bird. It is likely that having bought an already tamed parrot, in a week your pet will eat from your hands, and in a month they will take joint walks around the apartment. In any case, show patience and kindness, and your efforts will pay off in sincere friendship for many years to come.
