How to remove a tick from a cat?
What to do if you still failed to protect the cat from ticks? How to get a tick out at home? Our recommendations will help!
- Remove the parasite. You can contact a veterinarian or remove a tick from a cat at home, on your own. To do this, use a special tick remover, which can be purchased at the zoo pharmacy.
Grab the tick with the tool close to the bite site and gently twist it counterclockwise until it is completely removed. A good tongs twister securely holds the parasite without squeezing its torso.
But removing the tick with your fingers is not a good idea. By squeezing the swollen body with your fingers, you force the parasite to “spit out” some of the drunk blood into the wound, and with it more pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, the likelihood of infection increases.
Don’t forget to wear gloves!
- Treat the bite site with an alcohol-free disinfectant (for example, Vetericin).
- Place the extracted tick in a sealed container and take it to a specialized laboratory for analysis. The results obtained will allow us to judge the risks of the cat’s disease.
- Monitor the condition of the pet until you receive the results of the study, at least within a day. The slightest increase in temperature, loss of appetite, lethargy, any change in behavior – all these are reasons to sound the alarm and contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Infections carried by ticks may not appear immediately, but the defeat always occurs very quickly. Without timely and correct treatment, the pet may die.
Be careful and do not risk the health of the wards!
