How to name a kitten?
Basic principles for choosing a name
There are several rules that experts advise to follow when choosing a name for a pet. So, it should not be very long and not very complicated, the animal will better remember the nickname of 1-2 syllables. Since cats react vividly to whistling sounds, it is recommended to choose a name for a kitten with the letters “s”, “z” and “c” in the composition. At the same time, hissing sounds, on the contrary, can cause aggression in the animal – the sounds “sh” and “u” remind him of prey and small rodents.
Features of the animal
You can choose a name based on the features that are characteristic of a kitten. Observing a pet in the first days of his life in the house can tell you which nickname is best for this particular animal. Does he like to spend time playing quietly? Or is he a fidget and constantly looking for the attention of others? Does it make any toy stand out from the rest?
Often the nickname is determined by the appearance of the pet and the resulting associations. What color is his fur? Is he fluffy? Perhaps he looks like Bagheera or Garfield?
Do not rush to make the final choice. A suitable name may come to mind after a few days or even weeks, when the pet’s habits become more obvious.
Name originality
Pedigree cats with an impressive pedigree have long and complex names. In this case, nicknames with a “royal”, aristocratic train, such as Karl, Heinrich or Godiva, are quite appropriate.
Usually, the cats participating in exhibitions have long and multi-component names, and the name of the cattery often appears in them. However, it happens that the owner of an ordinary domestic cat wants to highlight his pet with the help of a nickname, relying on his imagination. Examples of real-life long nicknames: Lucky Ticket Dzhubatus, Gentle Tigers Beatrice, Kondratiy Fanny Animal.
If a kitten is brought up for oneself and an exhibition career is not planned for him, then when choosing a name, you can refer to the names of cartoon characters – Matroskin, Tom, Woof. Remember the geography – India (that, by the way, was the name of the cat of George W. Bush), Utah, Nara. Or mythology – Hera, Zeus, Demeter.
Some owners name animals after their favorite sports clubs, car brands, music bands, and famous people. And some choose a common name like Borya, Vaska or Marusya.
List of names
Keep in mind that the kitten will have to remember its own name and learn to respond to it. Even if a long name is chosen for a pet, sooner or later it will receive an abbreviated version for the convenience of the household.
