How to measure the height of a cat?

How to measure the height of a cat?

It’s actually quite simple. The height of a cat is the distance from the floor to the withers. According to statistics, the “standard” domestic cat is 23-25 cm tall, while the main feline representative in nature – the lion – reaches a height of 1,2 meters. But no less homely Maine Coon comparable in height to a medium-sized dog: some individuals grow up to 45 cm.

Measuring a cat’s height is fairly easy. If she is calm, you can put her next to any object on which it is easy to make a mark, mark the distance from the floor to the withers, and then measure the resulting height with a centimeter or ruler. If the pet resists, problems may arise. Some owners manage to measure the height of their cat in a prone position by making marks on a piece of paper, however, the error of such measurements increases greatly.

In the clinic, a veterinarian can measure the height of a cat with a special device – this method will, of course, be the most accurate. The standard of any breed indicates the length of the cat’s body and its height at the withers (as well as weight, but this is the easiest to measure). But it is the length of the body that is the most common unit. Firstly, it is easier to measure it – just put a centimeter from the “beginning” of the cat to its “end”, that is, from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. And secondly, it is thanks to the length of the body of a kitten or a cat that you can approximately find out its age. A newborn kitten usually does not exceed 12 cm in length, and at 4 months its length already exceeds 22 cm. By measuring height, and not length, it is more difficult to predict the age of the animal, because the length of the paws (and therefore height) largely depends on the breed and genetic features. Adult cats of the same age and breed can have the same length, but different heights, which means they look different large.
