How to know if a cat is pregnant?
The duration of a cat’s pregnancy depends on the breed and the individual characteristics of the pet. On average, this period is 9 weeks, but it can vary from 58 to 72 days. In the early stages, it is almost impossible to determine the pregnancy of a cat, especially if you are not a specialist. Be patient: the first signs of pregnancy appear in the third week.
The first signs of pregnancy in a cat:
The cat becomes less active, eats less;
The nipples swell and redden from the 17th day of pregnancy, but this is clearly visible only in cats that give birth for the first time – in those who have already given birth, it is more difficult to determine.
It is believed that already in the fourth week of kittens in the stomach can be felt. However, do not try to do it yourself. In this matter, it is better to trust a specialist, since carelessness and strong pressure can harm not only kittens, but also a cat. The doctor will examine the pet and prescribe the necessary tests.
Pregnancy can be diagnosed by ultrasound on the 21st day after mating.
Further changes in the cat’s body occur in the sixth week. At this time, the kittens begin to develop very quickly, and the mother’s belly increases dramatically in size. This is especially noticeable if the cat is carrying more than two kittens.
In the seventh week, touching the stomach, you can feel the movement of the babies. This should be done very carefully so as not to harm them. At this time, the cat usually begins to look for a secluded place for childbirth.
A week before the birth, the cat’s belly increases even more in size, the nipples swell, and colostrum may be secreted. The animal becomes, as it were, detached, sleeps more. And a couple of days before giving birth, the cat, on the contrary, loses its rest and may stop eating.
Pregnancy in cats does not last long, only a couple of months. Therefore, it is important to provide proper care for your pet in time. Remember: the health of a cat and kittens directly depends on the course of pregnancy, nutrition and lifestyle.
