How to help a cat stop being afraid of thunder and fireworks?
Cats are often frightened by loud noises, especially thunder and fireworks. Usually they try to hide. A cat that has a strong fear of a loud sound may exhibit anxiety behavior even before the thunder rumbles. Rain drumming on the roof of a house, bright flashes of light, or even a drop in atmospheric pressure before a thunderstorm starts can be reason enough for her to worry. It is important to know what to do in such a situation:
- Stay calm – this will help your cat feel safe. You can try to distract her from the thunder and fireworks by playing.
- Make sure your cat has a safe place to hide. Cats usually hide under a sofa or armchair from loud noise. They choose these places because they feel protected there, and the peals of thunder and the roar of fireworks are muffled. If your cat has not yet chosen such a place, help her. Try leaving a few bites of your pet’s favorite food, such as Hill’s Science Plan, in a secluded spot of your choice to encourage him to go there.
Try to reduce your cat’s anxiety at loud noises. Make this sound familiar to her. This can be achieved by playing recorded thunder sounds at low volumes and at short intervals. Observe the behavior of the cat. This is a long process and will require your patience. But in the end, everything will work out and your cat will be much more comfortable during a thunderstorm or not far from fireworks.
