How to ensure the safety of a cat in an apartment?

Unfortunately, cases of pet falling out of the window happen quite often. Carelessness, negligence and inattention can play a cruel joke: curious cats care about everything, and even more so on their own territory.

Basic safety rules:

  1. Windows and balcony must be closed

The very first and most important rule of all cat owners: the windows and the door to the unglazed balcony should always be closed. A fall from a height can end very tragically – from fractures and bruises to the death of a pet.

It’s not just high floors that are dangerous. A domestic cat that has fallen from the first or second floor can easily be lost: a frightened pet will try to hide from the “scary” street in a quiet place.

Ajar plastic vertical windows are also unsafe, in which the pet can easily get stuck. And without outside help, it is quite difficult for a cat to get out of there.

Decision. If you are used to airing the apartment, get mosquito nets: there are both light models and heavier ones – they are held on special mounts that can withstand the jolts of even the most active and strong cats.

On the balcony, you can also place a protective net, preferably metal, or build a walking cage-veranda for your pet.

  2. Remove the wires

This advice is especially relevant when a kitten has recently appeared in the house. Often, adult cats do not pay attention to electrical wires, which cannot be said about their young relatives. Meanwhile, cases of electric shock to curious kittens are not uncommon.

Decision. Remove, as far as possible, the wires from the pet’s field of vision, or give them additional protection in the form of tubes. Another option: the wires can be treated with a repellent spray, which is sold at a veterinary pharmacy.

  3. Graft your pet

Owners of domestic cats are convinced that since the pet does not walk on the street, then it is not necessary to vaccinate it. However, this is a fundamentally wrong belief. The owner can bring home viruses and other infectious agents from the street on shoes and outerwear.

Decision. Be sure to follow the cat’s vaccination schedule, visit the veterinarian regularly and conduct preventive examinations in a timely manner. Also, do not forget about deworming your pet – this is an important preventive procedure that will protect not only the animal, but also all households.

  4. Give up “rain” and other similar decor

As practice shows, most cats are not indifferent not only to the New Year trees themselves, but also to the festive tinsel. A long shiny and rustling decoration attracts pets. The danger is that such a “delicacy” can severely damage the intestines of the animal. By the way, for the same reason, games with a ball of thread are also dangerous.

Decision. Do not give dangerous toys to animals, do not use rain as decoration. If you notice that the pet has already eaten such an object, in no case do not pull on the tip if it sticks out of the pet’s mouth or anus.

Do not give any medication on your own. You should immediately contact your veterinarian and follow his instructions.

  5. Isolate plants

Not many people know about it, but some houseplants are not so safe for cats. Some can cause mild poisoning, while others can lead to the death of the animal. Carefully study your “home garden” for the presence of such representatives of the flora.

Solution. Since very often plants cause both play and food interest of a cat, they must be protected. Hang flowers or cover them with a net so that the cat cannot reach the pot. If the pet still strives to nibble on the leaves, buy grass for him at the pet store and grow it at home especially for the pet.
