How to choose a cage for a budgerigar?
The foundation of a happy budgie life is a comfortable cage. But how to choose the right model? What features to pay attention to?
- Material
The most important characteristic of the cell is the material. The classic and at the same time the best solution for parrots is all-metal products, for example, nickel-plated, made of steel wire. They transmit light well, do not block the view, are not afraid of moisture and disinfectant solutions.
In no case do not purchase cages made of copper. From moisture and detergents, copper is covered with oxide poisonous to birds.
Despite pleasant associations with nature, wooden structures for parrots are a poor choice. Wood gets dirty easily, absorbs water and disinfectant solutions, and is an excellent hiding place for external parasites. Combination cages are usually made from a wooden frame and metal rods, but are not the best solution.
However, products made of synthetic material, for example, organic glass, not only look beautiful and modern, but also compete with all-metal models. They are hygienic, not afraid of moisture and disinfection, but, unfortunately, vulnerable to hot water, high temperatures and fire hazard.
- Form
Despite being spectacular and decorative, round and multifaceted cages are not suitable for budgerigars. They can be a good addition to the interior, but your pet will feel bad in them.
The optimal shape of the cage for parrots is rectangular, with a flat top. It is convenient for birds in it, besides, when keeping several parrots, it will be possible to install one structure on top of another and, thus, save space in the apartment.
- Size
Budgerigars do not fly, but their cage should be fairly spacious. The main thing is that the bird can freely spread its wings without touching the rods.
Budgerigars often move along longitudinal perches, so height and width are not as important as its length. The optimal cage size for two budgerigars is 60 x 30 x 40 cm, but breeding requires a more spacious structure, from 100 cm in length.
- What should be in the cage?
A budgerigar must have a feeder and drinker (at a distance from each other so that water does not get on the food), 2-3 perches, a couple of toys and a mineral stone for grinding the beak.
It is recommended to purchase a cage with a retractable bottom, this facilitates cleaning and protects the bird from stress. For greater convenience, sand is poured down in a thin layer (as a filler), which retains unpleasant odors.
Guided by these characteristics, you can easily find a reliable and comfortable home for your budgerigar!
