How do you prepare for cycling with your dog?
What does it take to make a bike ride with a dog successful?
First, a special bike leash, or velospringer. With it, you will free your hands, because it is attached to the back of the bike, usually under the seat. The dog will have room to maneuver, but at the same time you will be able to control it.
Secondly, you will need a harness. It will reduce the load on the dog’s neck, besides, the pet will definitely not be able to escape from it if it suddenly decides to run away in the other direction.
Third, don’t forget the water! During an active run, the dog will want to drink – make stops and water your pet, especially if it is hot and sunny outside.
Fourth, start small. The dog must get used to the new activity, and you must make sure that you can control not only the bike, but also the pet running nearby. Therefore, be sure to start with small trips to places that you are familiar with. Over time, when the pet gets used to it, you can go further and further with it, as well as increase the speed of your walk.
If you are going for a walk in the evening, make sure that the dog is visible in the dark. To do this, you can put on a special reflective vest or attach reflective elements to the harness and leash.
And, of course, remember about safety – do not ride on roads with active traffic, always monitor the condition of the dog and do not load it if it is not ready for this. Not all breeds can keep their owners company during cycling, so soberly assess the physical fitness of the pet and its endurance.
