How do you know if a hamster is sick?

Rodents can’t tell us when they’re feeling unwell in words, and their symptoms aren’t as pronounced as they are in dogs and cats. If hamsters eat something wrong, you will not notice nausea in them, since rodents do not have a gag reflex. An elevated temperature in rodents cannot be suspected by a dry nose, and general malaise – by refusing to play your favorite ball. It remains to closely monitor the behavior of the animal and conduct a daily home inspection. We’ll tell you what to look out for.

Why is it important to notice the symptoms right away?

Hamsters don’t like human contact. During the day, they spend most of their time in their house, and they prefer to explore the area around at night. If the owners are in contact with dogs and cats throughout the day, then we are more likely to observe rodents from the side, minimally in contact with them. Therefore, it can be difficult to immediately notice an alarming symptom.

The body of hamsters is very sensitive. Any stress factor can affect the well-being of the pet: cause digestive problems, lead to bloating and other problems.

Symptoms of diseases in rodents develop very quickly. There are many cases when a hamster “suddenly” died, and its owner did not even have time to understand that something was going wrong. Most often, such sad scenarios are associated with improper feeding. Inappropriate food can lead to blockage of the gastrointestinal tract and bloating, and then to death.

To prevent trouble, the hamster should be examined every day. What should alert you?

Print out the phone number of a trusted ratologist and a veterinary clinic where rodents can be accepted around the clock. It is better to check 7 times than to overlook one.

What to do if the hamster is sick?

Hamsters are fragile and sensitive pets. If you notice at least one symptom of the disease, the only right decision is to contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. He will diagnose and, if necessary, prescribe treatment.

If you suspect a disease, take your hamster to a specialist as soon as possible. It may turn out that nothing threatened your pet. Or maybe your quick reaction will save his life.

Without special education, it is impossible to correctly diagnose and prescribe treatment. Unfortunately, there are many cases when amateur performance cost a pet its life. Try not to repeat this sad experience.

Take care of your pets and may they always be in good health!
