How do exotic animals feel at home?
Hello. Perhaps everyone thought before buying an animal: how will it feel in captivity? After all, a small and cramped terrarium is no match for a huge natural biotope. We will not be able to fully know the feelings and sensations of the animal, but it is easy to look at the statistics. Consider the situation on the example of the Red-bellied Toad (Bombina bombina)
This small frog (up to 6 cm) is common in central and eastern Europe. In general, an ordinary, typical, if I may say so, kind. Near Moscow, underyearlings (i.e. individuals that were born this year) make up 96.9% of the population in August, 21% of one-year-olds, and 1-3% of older ages. The bulk of underyearlings die during the period of landfall during a new wintering, which only 2-6% survive. There are approximately 40% of one-year-old toads, so in nature very, very few individuals reach the age of two years. In the Volga-Kama Reserve, only one was found in the fifth year of life. In captivity, this species lives up to 29 years.
