How to properly care for a cat’s ears?

The ears of pets are almost the same as those of humans. And so that they hear well and do not get sick, they need to be looked after. Mom licks the ears of small kittens, and adults cope with cleaning on their own. In animals, sulfur, dust and other environmental contaminants can accumulate in the ear canals.

The rules of care are universal for all breeds of cats of all ages.

1. If the dust accumulated in the pet’s ears is not removed in time, then the activity of the sulfur glands increases. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the cleanliness of the room where the animal lives and regularly wipe the visible surface of the ears with a cotton swab.
2. Earwax is produced more actively in cats with little hair in their ears. Therefore, the ears of short-haired and “naked” breeds of animals need special care.
3. If the pet’s ears are not cleaned, then they chamois plug is formed, which will put pressure on the ear canal and interfere with the work of the vestibular apparatus. This can cause migraines or dizziness in cats.

To prevent this, it is enough to clean the ears once a month or as needed.

How to train a cat to examine the ears?

The procedure for cleaning the ears should not turn into stress for the animal, therefore the kitten should be accustomed graduallystarting simply with an examination of the ears.

1. So that the examination does not cause bad associations, you can play with your pet in front of it, and after the procedure, treat it to something tasty.
2. To fix the head, it is best to wrap it in a towel, which should not be pulled too tight.
3. Ears will need to be bent back and turned inside out, as it were. There should be no accumulations and dark deposits inside.
4. In the presence of brown bumps and black spots, it should be concluded that the cat is sick.

How and how to clean the ears of a cat?

With a prophylactic purpose, it will be enough to prepare only cotton swabs or discs for cleaning the auricle of an animal. If the ears are dirty, then a special gel or lotion will need to be purchased at the pet store.

To clean the auricles of dirt, you will need up to six cotton swabs. You cannot reuse the same disc or swab.

In a fixed cat, the ear must be bent and twisted as much as possible.

First, the inner surface of the auricle is wiped with a dry swab. If there is no dirt or there is little of it, then the cleaning procedure can be completed.

To clean up the dirt cotton swab pre-wetted gel or lotion. In no case should you pour funds directly into the auricle! However, if it is written in the instructions, then you can drip a few drops of lotion to soften the sulfur plugs.

When brushing, the movements should be directed outward. This will help pull out the dirt, rather than pushing it deep into the ear.

If the procedure is performed with cotton swabs, then you should act very carefully. She needs to wipe her ears, and not put her in the passage. It is not recommended to use homemade cotton swabs, as cotton wool can easily fly off from them and remain in the auricle.

Do not use products intended for people to clean the ears of animals. A soapy solution can dry out a kitten’s ear canal, and hydrogen peroxide, even the weakest concentration, can cause a burn.

Cleaning the ears of a lop-eared cat

How to get rid of ear mites?

A cat infected with an ear mite experiences itching. Scabs accumulate inside his auricles, which you can get rid of with the help of the Bars drug. In addition to this tool, you will need to prepare: about thirty cotton swabs and boric acid in powder.

1. A little of the drug “Bars” needs to be poured into some small container into which it will be convenient to dip cotton swabs.
2. The cat is fixed and its auricle turns outward.
3. With the help of cotton buds, dark plaque is cleaned from the ears. First of all scrape off large piecesand then smaller ones.
4. Sticks or tampons should be changed frequently. They cannot be reused.
5. After the auricles are freed from scabs and plaque, you can begin to remove ticks. For this you need to use cotton swabsdipped in the preparation “Bars”.
6. The auditory opening will need to be cleaned at a depth of about 0,5 cm.
7. After the auricle becomes clean, to consolidate the result, you will need to pour a little boric acid into your ears. It pours on those places that are infected with a tick.

Such cleaning in the first week is carried out every other day, then once a week and then once a month. Ears are treated until the ticks disappear completely.
