Healthy skin and coat

An important part of maintaining a dog’s overall health is taking care of the health of its skin and coat. The amount of grooming required can vary, but all dogs require regular grooming.

There are many salons offering various grooming services at reasonable prices. The local pet store can usually find out where the nearest good private grooming salon is located, and the local veterinary clinic can also provide grooming services. Grooming staff should be well trained and familiar with the needs of your breed of dog. They can also clean their ears and trim their nails.

You can groom yourself

You can groom at home on your own, or do at least a minimal amount with occasional visits to a professional groomer. Grooming is a great opportunity to spend time together as most dogs love the attention you give them when you brush them.

A healthy coat should be soft and relatively smooth, even in shorthaired and wirehaired breeds. The coat should be shiny, but not greasy and should not have a pronounced smell. If there are problems, the coat will be dry and brittle, there will be a lot of fallen hairs. The coat itself can be oily or “dusty” in appearance. Other signs of a coat problem are bald patches and rancid oil odor.

Brush your hair regularly

Brushing is the most important part of grooming a dog. Long-haired breeds should be brushed twice a week, and dogs that shed or have thick undercoats should be brushed once a week. Even short-haired dogs need to be brushed to remove loose hairs.

As with any business, combing requires the right tools. There are as many different types of brushes and combs as there are types of wool. Ideally, you will need two brushes, one with sparse bristles for combing the outer layer of the coat, and one with thicker bristles for thorough brushing of the coat all the way down and around the muzzle. Ask your veterinarian or professional groomer what they recommend.

Water procedures

“Doggy odor” usually results from a buildup of bacteria and oils in the dog’s coat. And while your dog may be completely happy without a bath, a thorough bath will remove these buildups. However, you should not wash your dog too often – this can lead to dryness and irritation of the skin, so unless the dog is too dirty (street dirt, feces, etc.), you should not wash it more than once a month.

The main rule – do not use shampoos for people. Baby shampoo is safe and does not irritate the eyes, but contains detergents so mild that they cannot remove stubborn dirt or grease. It is best to use products designed specifically for dogs. You can purchase them from your veterinarian or your local pet store.

Proper nutrition

Another important aspect of keeping the coat healthy is nutrition. Hair is mostly made up of proteins, and the better your dog is fed, the better his coat will be. Diets enriched with essential fatty acids are especially beneficial for a dog’s coat. If you find any problems with coat or skin, the cause of them may be malnutrition. Discuss with your veterinarian what kind of diet he would recommend for your dog.
