Golec Kyulja
Kuhl’s acanthophthalmus or Kuhl’s loach, scientific name Pangio kuhlii, belongs to the family Cobitidae (Loach). The fish is native to Southeast Asia, found mainly on the islands of Indonesia. Inhabits various biotopes – from mountain streams to peat bogs.
Description
Adults reach a length of up to 12 cm. With its long body, the fish resembles an eel or a snake. The striped pattern consists of large brownish segments separated by yellow rings. There is a dark spot on the tail. The fins are short. The mouth has 2 pairs of antennae.
There is some confusion between closely related species of Acanthophthalmus, which have very slight visible differences that are noticeable only to narrow specialists in this field. For this reason, the same species is often supplied under different names. For example, Kuhl’s charr is often referred to as Acanthophthalmus semigirdled or Myers’ Acanthophthalmus and vice versa.
For the aquarist, such confusion is not significant, since the fish have similar requirements for their content.
Behavior and Compatibility
Peaceful calm fish, prefers to be in a group. They lead a nocturnal lifestyle. During the daytime, they will hide in shelters. They get along well with other closely related species. Compatible with many aquarium fish of comparable size. As neighbors, it is recommended to acquire species that live in the water column or near the surface. Care should be taken when choosing among catfish, charrs and cichlids, some of which exhibit territorial behavior and are quite aggressive.

Maintenance and care, arrangement of aquariums
The optimal size of the aquarium for a group of 4-5 fish starts from 70-80 liters. Great for beginner aquarists. Easy to maintain, subject to a few simple rules.
First, it is necessary to provide soft ground where Acanthophthalmus Kühl will burrow, and provide places for shelters, for example, in the form of snags.
Secondly, since the fish often hide in very narrow openings, crevices, there is a high probability that they may accidentally end up in the water intake hole of the filtration system. Do not leave open (unprotected) openings of tubes and other underwater communications in the aquarium.
Otherwise, there are no difficulties with the content. It is important to carry out regular maintenance of the aquarium and prevent the accumulation of organic waste, strong (sharp) fluctuations in the values of hydrochemical parameters.
Food
In nature, they feed on everything they can find at the bottom, sifting portions of soil with their mouths. A similar situation is observed in aquariums when they pick up uneaten food particles left over from other fish. However, it is not necessary to form a diet according to the residual principle. Sinking foods (flakes, pellets, etc.) should be fed regularly to avoid malnutrition. Feed shortly before the lights go out.
