Aquarium Fish Disease

Fungal plaque on eggs

In any aquatic biosystem, including in an aquarium, various fungal spores are invariably present, which, under favorable conditions, begin to grow rapidly.

A common problem when breeding fish is the infection of the masonry with the fungi Achyla and Saprolegnia. First of all, fungi settle on damaged, diseased or unfertilized eggs, but then quickly spread to healthy ones.

Symptoms

A white or grayish fluffy coating appeared on the eggs

Causes of the disease

Often there is no cause for this disease. The absorption of dead eggs by the fungus is a natural process, a kind of recycling. However, in some cases, the reason lies in unsuitable conditions, for example, for some fish, spawning and the subsequent development of eggs should occur in twilight or in the dark, as well as at certain pH values. If the conditions are violated, the likelihood of developing a fungus becomes very high.

Treatment

There is no cure for the fungus, the only effective method is to quickly remove infected eggs with a pipette, tweezers or a needle.

It is often recommended to use a weak concentration of methylene blue for prevention, which actually destroys most fungal spores. However, along with them, useful nitrifying bacteria also die, which can lead to an increase in the concentration of ammonia in the water, which is already detrimental to eggs.
