The coronavirus has affected the entire equestrian community to a greater or lesser extent. Tournaments are canceled, horse sales are not as active as before. However, “farmers and forage suppliers are not among those affected by the crisis,” says Emile Hendrix, a former Dutch top rider and stable owner of Stal Hendrix.

“The horse business is very profitable,” says Hendrix. “But things have changed lately. We see that there are practically no sales of horses now, and competitions are temporarily not held. Some have been hit hard and it’s all because costs continue to arise, especially for riding schools and stables that sell horses. They must continue to keep horses and train without profit. Top riders usually make money by getting prizes, but now this opportunity is not available either. There are no tournaments, and all that remains for us is to be patient and wait for further developments. ”

“The only professions least affected by the current crisis are farriers and feed suppliers,” adds Hendrix. “They provide the basic needs of horses. Naturally, the hooves continue to grow and the horses continue to eat. Therefore, they certainly can be confident in the future.”

However, Hendrix remains positive: “I don’t believe in a scary scenario. I am convinced that people will continue to ride and continue to buy horses. It is possible that our capacity will increase again in June, or maybe it will take another six months. Nobody knows how things will turn out.”
