Fern “Thor’s Hammer”
Fern “Thor’s Hammer”, scientific name Microsorum pteropus, variety “Thors Hammer”. It is an ornamental variety of the Thai fern. It first appeared in one of the aquarium plant nurseries in Poland, thanks to the efforts of the breeder Roland Strößner.
The tips of the leaves are divided into several large fragments, vaguely resembling a hammer, for which the plant got its name. A similar structure has Vindelova Fern, but the processes at the tips of its leaves are noticeably smaller.
Fern “Thor’s Hammer” forms a dense bush about 20 cm high, which will look good in the middle or background. It belongs to epiphytes, therefore it is placed on snags or other design elements with a rough surface. It is fixed with a fishing line, special glue and other devices. When the roots securely hold the plant, the fasteners are removed. Roots should not be immersed in a dense substrate such as sandy soil.
Reproduction occurs by dividing the creeping rhizome into parts, or by separating young sprouts that form on old leaves. Rarely used method of reproduction by spores.
Differs in endurance and unpretentiousness. Able to grow in a variety of conditions, making it a good choice for the beginner aquarist.
