Fatty Helms

Crassula Helms, Crassula Helms or Australian needle grass, scientific name Crassula helmsii. One of the few aquatic plants in the large Crassulaceae family, which are mostly succulents growing in arid desert or semi-desert environments. Fat Helms, in her turn, adapted to a different environment. In nature, it is found along the banks of rivers and marshes, partially or completely submerged in water at a depth of up to 3 meters.

Initially, the growth area covered only Australia and New Zealand, however, at present, this plant has spread widely throughout Europe as an invasive species, significantly affecting the local flora.

The plant reaches a height of up to 30 cm. Under water, the stems and leaves become very thin, the latter begin to resemble miniature branches. In the surface position, for example, on wet ground along a pond or paludarium, the stems become massive, the leaves are dense “fleshy”. It is not uncommon for the appearance of small flowers with blue hues.

Easy to grow species, suitable for both aquariums and open ponds, anywhere in the country. Crassula Helms is unpretentious, able to grow successfully in a wide range of temperatures, including cold water, and hydrochemical values. The composition of the soil is not significant. Minerals produced in a healthy ecosystem will suffice.
