Eichornia variegated

Eichhornia diversifolia, scientific name Eichhornia diversifolia. This rooting underwater and at the same time floating plant is found in the tropical climate zone of Central and South America. It grows in flowing reservoirs and rivers, where it forms a kind of floating “islands”.

Outwardly, it resembles a palm tree – a central massive stem from which long ribbon-like green leaves extend. When reaching the surface, the shape of the leaf blade changes to a rounded one. In this updated form, Eichornia heterophylla continues to grow already on the surface of the water. In favorable conditions and the presence of free space around the plant, many daughter shoots appear, creating dense thickets. In the form of a dense cluster, it becomes similar to another closely related plant – Heteranthera holly. Previously, it was believed that both plants are incompatible due to allelopathy, but recent studies have refuted this hypothesis.

It is a demanding plant, which is why it is not recommended for beginner aquarists. It is necessary to provide a high level of lighting. The lack of light leads to the gradual death of the leaves. It will also be necessary to provide additional introduction of carbon dioxide, high concentrations of mineral (iron) and nutrients: about 5–20 mg/l of nitrates, 1–2 mg/l of phosphates.
