Wool types

A significant role in the choice of cosmetics is played by the type of pet’s coat.

short hair

The hair is of medium length, has a short fluffy undercoat and a longer guard hair, which is stiff. Examples of breeds: Labrador, Karelian-Finnish Laika, Husky, Central Asian Shepherd Dog.

Long hair with undercoat

It differs in the length of the outer hair. Voluminous, with a very dense undercoat, sheds heavily, requires frequent combing during the molting period. Doesn’t get wet or dirty. Examples of breeds: Collie, Spitz, Chow Chow, Samoyed.

Long coat with no or minimal undercoat

Such wool is prone to the formation of tangles. In some breeds, the coat is soft and fine, grows non-stop evenly throughout the body, including the muzzle and ears, requires clipping and does not shed. Others have tougher, smoother, shinier, especially long hair on the paws, chest and tail, it requires combing and timely haircuts, but even in shedding the amount of hair shed is minimal. Examples of breeds: Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese; Irish Setter, English Spaniel, Longhair Dachshund.

smooth wool

Very little undercoat, outer hair short and close to the body. However, quite a lot of hairs fall out during the seasonal molt. Examples of breeds: Doberman, Bull Terrier, Boxer, Basenji.

coarse wool

The difference from other types is that the outer hair is very hard and does not fall out on its own, such dogs need special care: combing the beard, trimming, using products to cleanse the beard from dark spots, texturizing cosmetics. Breed examples: Schnauzers, Drathaar, West Highland White Terrier, Irish Terrier.

curly wool

The outer hair is twisted, they also need special grooming: haircuts and combing. Example Breeds: Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, Kerry Blue Terrier, Bichon Frize

Exotic (corded) wool

Here, without the help of a groomer, without proper experience, you can’t do it, home care can be difficult. Examples of breeds: komondor, puli (corded type of wool)

Dogs without hair or with a small amount of it

Skin care products are used, moisturizing, softening, and separately suitable products for coat, if the dog has it. Examples: Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintle, American Hairless Terrier. On cosmetics, as a rule, they indicate what type of wool it is intended for, or is it a universal option.

Shampoos

As mentioned earlier, shampoos are needed to cleanse the coat and skin. Please note that pets should not be bathed with human shampoo. Since the pH of the skin of humans and dogs is different. Using the wrong shampoo can cause dry skin, itching, flaking, dullness of the coat. Wet your pet’s coat to use. Lather the shampoo on the coat, massage and rinse. Therapeutic and antiparasitic shampoos are washed off after a certain time specified in the instructions in order for them to work.

  • Tinted shampoos give a brighter color to the coat. In the case of white wool, yellowness is removed, black – they add shine and depth of color, red – add brightness.
  • For dogs with different types of coats: texturizing for rough-haired, softening and moisturizing for long-haired dogs without undercoat, giving volume for fluffy dogs.
  • For hairless dogs. Enhanced anti-comedone formula, softening and moisturizing the skin.
  • For puppies. As a rule, they have a softer coat and additional moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe vera extract or milk protein, are included in shampoos.
  • Medicated shampoos. They differ in composition and direction. There are antifungal, antibacterial shampoos to eliminate itching, hair loss.
  • Shampoos for the prevention of parasitic diseases. These products have an insecticidal and acaricidal effect, suitable for not very strong infection with external parasites.

Powder

This is a dry powder shampoo. Useful for dogs living outside the home or when bathing is contraindicated, such as after surgery. The powder is applied to the coat by sprinkling, rubbed in, and then combed out with a brush. The shampoo captures excess fat and desquamated epithelium, refreshes the coat and has a beneficial effect on the skin. Not suitable if the dog is very dirty.

Perfumes and refreshing sprays

Adding fragrance to pet hair. Essential oils are usually the basis of perfume for dogs. It is applied by spraying on wool. Use with caution, essential oils can cause allergic reactions in particularly sensitive dogs. Most often they are in the form of sprays.

Spray

Spray shampoos without rinsing are sprayed onto the animal’s coat, massaged, wiped with a towel and combed out. It is also used for cleaning and caring for dogs that cannot be washed normally, but can only be used in a warm room or outdoors during the warm season, in order to avoid hypothermia of the dog. There are also various conditioner sprays for tangles, for easy combing, to add volume and shine to the coat.

Oil and wax

It is used for skin care, dry nose and paw pads. An alternative to protecting paw pads is a special wax, especially in winter, which helps to avoid the negative effects of chemicals and cold. Use before walking. For skin care, oils are used in the form of spot-ons, they must be applied to the withers, like drops from parasites. It is recommended to use drops once a week, if necessary.

Cream

Paw cream is used after a walk to moisturize, nourish and soften the paw pads.

Masks

Masks are necessary to restore dry, tangled hair. Especially relevant for show dogs or animals that are often washed and then dried with a hair dryer. Their coat may be dry and brittle. Masks are applied to clean, damp hair and washed off after 5-10 minutes.

Conditioner (Balm)

Balms and conditioners help maintain beauty and radiance, promote easy combing. Apply to clean, damp hair after shampooing, rinse off after a couple of minutes. Not as intense recovery as masks.
