Dog barks a lot
Sometimes the owners complain that the dog barks too much, and this turns into a real torture for the owners themselves and for the neighbors. Why does a dog bark a lot and can something be done about it?
Let’s start with the fact that barking is a normal species-typical behavior of a dog, that is, it is completely natural that it gives a voice. But if the dog barks too much, there may be the following reasons:
- Unintentional reinforcement on the part of the owner. The dog barks, then pauses and looks back at the owner: does he react? Or the dog stands in front of the owner and barks, demanding attention. If owners reinforce the dog’s barking in one way or another, this behavior becomes more frequent.
- The dog is bored and thus has fun. Especially if other dogs or neighbors react to her barking.
- The dog guards the territory, for example, barking at neighbors when they pass the door, or barking at people and dogs through the window. Or bursts into furious barking at the intercom.
Is there anything you can do if your dog is barking too much?
First, you can teach your dog to shut up on command.
Secondly, it is worth analyzing whether your dog’s life is boring, whether her freedom from grief and suffering is satisfied. And if in this sense not everything is safe, take measures to provide the pet with normal living conditions.
Thirdly, you can apply the desensitization method and accustom the dog to noises (for example, to the ringing of an intercom or a vacuum cleaner).
