Curly cat breeds
Unfortunately, due to artificial breeding, they tend to have more fragile health and are not as prolific as yard ones. But the populations of these wonderful creatures are growing, as is the number of people who want to get an unusual pet. The largest group of curly cats — it’s rex. By the way, in Latin “rex” — means “king”. Once upon a time, rex appeared in different parts of the world in different breeds of cats as a result of gene mutation. People saw non-standard kittens and started breeding them. So what are curly cats?
Contents
Selkirk-rex
The ancestor of the breed is a cat named Miss de Pesto. She was born in Montana to a stray cat. She was noticed by a breeder of Persian cats for her unusual coat, taken “in development” and gave birth to curly kittens. Selkirks can be either shorthaired or longhaired. Astrakhan fur, curly mustache and eyebrows.
Ural Rex
Russian native breed is rare. After the war, it was considered extinct. But in 1988, a curly-haired cat Vasily was born in the city of Zarechny. Numerous offspring went from him. There are also small populations in other regions of the Urals. Pretty large cats, distinguished by silky hair.
Devon rex
The ancestors of the breed were caught by felinologists in a pack of wild cats in the city of Buckfastley in England in 1960. The founder of the breed is officially considered a black cat named Kirli. These cats are distinguished by an alien appearance, sometimes they are called elf cats. Huge ears, huge, wide-set eyes, mustache twisted into a ball — you can’t confuse the Devons with anyone. There are already a lot of them in the world, but in Russia they are still considered a rare breed.
German Rex
The ancestor is considered a curly-haired cat named Kater Munch, whose owner was Erna Schneider, who lived in the 1930s on the territory of present-day Kaliningrad. His parents were Russian Blue and Angora cats. Outwardly, Germans resemble ordinary fine short-haired snow leopards and muroks, but with curly hair. The breed is considered rare.
bohemian rex
A breed that appeared in the Czech Republic in the 1980s. Two Persians have kittens with curly hair. They became the founders of a new breed. Outwardly, they differ from Persian cats only in curly hair. The coat can be of medium length and very long.
LaPerms
The owner of a farm near Dallas (USA) had a domestic cat on March 1, 1982, who gave birth to kittens. One kitten was almost bald. Growing up, the kitten was covered with short curly hair. The owner left such an interesting cat for herself, naming him Kerli. And the cat gave birth — the same curls. He became the ancestor of a new breed. LaPerms — rather large cats, proportionately folded. There are short-haired and long-haired. Kittens can be born bald or with straight hair, a “signature” fur coat is formed during the first year of life.
Skokumy
The breed was created artificially in the 1990s by Roy Galusha (Washington State, USA) by crossing LaPerms and Munchkins. Mini-laperms on short legs. The breed is considered rare.
Several more experimental rex breeds are noted:
- raffle — curly curl;
- dakota rex — cats that are bred in the Dakota state of America;
- missourian rex — a breed that also arose as a result of a natural mutation;
- Maine Coon Rex – Royal Maine Coons with curly hair;
- menx-rex — tailless cats of Australia and New Zealand with curly hair;
- tennessee rex — the first seals were registered less than 15 years ago;
- poodle cat — curly lop-eared cats, bred in Germany;
- Oregon Rex — lost breed, they are trying to restore it. Graceful cats with tassels on the ears.
