Cichlids

The family of cichlids or Tsikhlovye combines a wide variety of species distributed on almost all continents. According to various estimates, the number of species known to science ranges from 2 to 3 thousand. However, almost half of the representatives of this family lives in only two lakes on the African continent, in particular – Tanganyika and Malawi (another name for Nyasa). These are unique ancient lakes, a kind of natural laboratory, in which, over millions of years of evolution, from just a few species of fish that got there (one of them is cichlids), many hundreds of new species have appeared.

Cichlids in most cases belong to territorial species, they are characterized by aggressive behavior towards relatives and other fish, but at the same time they are caring parents, which is rather nonsense for fish. Magnificent color forms, curious behavior and relative ease of maintenance have made them a success among aquarists all over the world.
