Can you walk a rabbit?
With the arrival of warm weather, the owners of cats, ferrets, rabbits and even small rodents begin to wonder if they should take their pet outside? Fresh air is good, but walking always comes with dangers. In our article we will talk about whether it is possible to walk a rabbit on the street.
Fresh air. For good health, rabbits need to breathe fresh air. Being in a stuffy room 24 hours a day, animals grow weak and sickly.
Physical exercise. Rabbits are very active pets and in their natural habitat they cover impressive distances every day. Now imagine an aviary in which not one, but several animals live. You don’t really run into it! Meanwhile, active pastime is a guarantee of healthy bones and joints, as well as excellent health.
Variety of experiences. Fresh air, green grass, warmth and sunshine – all this is very lacking for our pets. Walking and a change of scenery is a great way to please them!
Nature is, of course, good. But what is the nature in the metropolis? Not everyone can boast of clean air and clean green grass outside the window. Animals taken out for a walk in the yard are more likely to encounter exhaust fumes and polluted lawns.
The street is fraught with many dangers. On a walk, a rabbit may meet a sick animal or its secretions. Protecting a pet from the latter is almost impossible. And the risk of catching an infection is very high.
Rabbits are shy creatures, but very dexterous. You can be distracted for just one second, and the pet will already run away! In addition, it is very difficult to choose a reliable harness for a rabbit. If you decide to take a chance, we recommend that you first test it several times at home.
- A rabbit that is not used to walking can easily catch a cold.
Now let’s sum up!
Experts still do not recommend walking rabbits on the street. The risk far outweighs the potential benefit. However, if you have a dacha or a country house with your own yard, the problem is solved. Get a special spacious aviary for walking, clear the area – and go ahead, let the pet walk. But only in good weather.
Another option is to take the cage with the rabbit to the balcony. But you can put it only in a place protected from wind and direct sunlight.
And, of course, no one canceled walking around the apartment under the strict supervision of the owner! Happy adventures to your wards!
