Can guinea pigs eat seeds and nuts?

The diet of guinea pigs consists of several parts, so the owners have to carefully control the list of products allowed for rodents. It is useful to find out in advance whether it is possible for guinea pigs to eat seeds, as well as which nut varieties can be included in the pet’s menu.

Guinea pig seeds: which are allowed

Experts recommend introducing seeds into the pig’s diet. This will diversify the menu and treat your pet with a delicious product. Many manufacturers add these seeds to industrial feed.

 The only contraindication is individual intolerance to the composition of the product.

Basic rules for adding seeds to the diet:

• choose fresh seeds without signs of spoilage;
• offer only raw;

Giving a fried product is strictly prohibited.

• before giving a treat, it is necessary to completely peel it from the husk;
• the share, together with nuts, in the total daily portion of food should be 15-20%.

Sunflower seeds are best for pets. With their help, you can even accustom the animal to play tunnels. In second place are pumpkin seeds. Fine flaxseed can be added in small quantities on top of the main feed.

Hemp seeds are not recommended.

What nuts are allowed to give a rodent

Concerning nuts opinions were divided. Some owners are of the opinion that this is an extra product, because under natural conditions the animals do not eat them. Others consider the kernels an excellent treat, subject to the measure, but recommend offering them to mobile and active animals.

The kernels must also be raw. The most suitable for guinea pigs are walnuts and hazelnuts. Many pets eat almonds with pleasure. But there is an opinion that the dose of hydrocyanic acid contained in it can be toxic to a pet.

Pine nuts and peanuts are best not considered as treats – these varieties contain too high a percentage of fat and can harm the health of the animal. If the pet is lazy and prefers to rest or sit in one place for more time, then it is better to exclude any types of nut kernels so as not to provoke the animal to become obese.
