Biewer York and Yorkshire Terrier: differences and characteristics of breeds
Many potential dog owners think about what breed is easiest to keep in a city apartment, and opt for a small dog. The most common of the small breeds is the Yorkshire Terrier. But the Yorkie also has a more compact relative – the Beaver Yorkie. How do they differ, besides the country of origin?
Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkies were bred in the UK, in the county of Yorkshire, which is reflected in the name of the breed. This is a decorative dog weighing no more than 4 kg and growing at the withers no higher than 20 cm. According to the classification of the International Film Festival, it belongs to terriers. The most famous representative of the breed is the Smokey dog, which has six monuments in the United States. For her services as a medical dog during the Second World War, she was awarded eight “Stars for Service”.
- Appearance. The main feature of the appearance of Yorkshire terriers is thick, long and thin hair, similar to human hair. Yorkies do not have an undercoat, so they are very sensitive to cold and in the autumn-winter period they need clothes. The coat color is bluish-blue and yellowish-brown. The muzzle of the Yorkie is small and compact, the ears are erect.
- Character. Yorkshire Terriers are very active and playful dogs. Despite their miniature size,Yorkies have a very specific personality.They can be jealous and even aggressive at times, and therefore need careful training from an early age, with the help of a professional dog handler. They perfectly fulfill the duties of a watchman, can be aggressive towards children, often and loudly bark.
- Keeping. Yorkie hair care requires regular visits to the groomer and thorough washing at home. The dog needs to be combed every day so that tangles do not form on the coat. Yorkies have a sensitive stomach, so it is best to consult with a breeder or veterinarian when formulating a diet.
Biewer Yorkshire Terrier
The Biewer Yorkie is a relative of the Yorkshire Terrier, bred in Germany. It has not yet been recognized by the FCI classifier, but the breed is registered in the Russian Cynological Federation. The weight of the biewer reaches 3,5 kg, and the height at the withers is no more than 17 cm. These dogs are the real long-livers – the life expectancy of the biewer Yorkie can reach up to 16 years. Recently, the breed is gaining more and more popularity among lovers of small dogs.
- Appearance. The main difference between the Biewer Yorkie and the Yorkshire Terrier is a brighter and shorter coat. The color is always tricolor: white, black and red in different combinations. The Biewer is smaller than the Yorkie and looks even more cute and smart. The head of the representatives of the breed is small and neat, the tail is high and pubescent, does not stop. The eyes are small and round, the ears are triangular, erect.
- Character. Beaver York is a real owner. A pet without appropriate training will be aggressive towards children and other animals, but even with proper upbringing, it will be extremely distrustful. From early childhood, the Biewer Yorkie must be trained and socialized, otherwise there is a risk of getting an uncontrollable and capricious pet that does only what it wants.
- Keeping. Beaver Yorkies are recommended regular examinations by a veterinarian: Some representatives of the breed suffer from hereditary diseases. Wool will also require constant care and daily combing. You need to wash the dog as it gets dirty, but at least once a month. The groomer may suggest giving your pet a haircut to make it easier. care for wool. The diet is recommended to be made together with the breeder. Commercial feeds for dwarf breeds are preferred.
Terrier, whether Yorkie or Biewer, is a very active creature and requires constant walks and active entertainment. It is worth choosing a less active breed if it seems that there will not be enough time for a four-legged friend with such needs.
