Bed for a dog: why is it?
We are happy to choose comfortable beds, pillows and houses for decorative dogs, because we cannot imagine a tiny pet sleeping on a rug in the hallway. But what about representatives of medium and large breeds? Do all dogs need beds or just decorative ones? Maybe big dogs would be more comfortable on the floor? Let’s talk about this in our article.
Let’s start right away with the destruction of the main stereotype. Many ascetic dog owners believe that beds are an excess invented for decorative pets, while other dogs feel quite comfortable in harsh conditions, i.e. lying on the bare floor. However, dog beds, in the first place, are not designed for the convenience of pets (as many believe), but to maintain their health, strengthen immunity and prevent diseases.
In the future, the same ascetic owner will begin to wonder how his strong four-legged friend got arthrosis and why large calluses formed on his elbows. But this is a direct consequence of the wrong conditions of detention.
Yes, a dog can sleep for several years on a thin rug in the hallway or even on a cold floor, and you will not notice any trouble until he starts having problems with his joints or develops cystitis. As you know, the disease is easier to prevent than to treat. It will be very disappointing if, due to an oversight of the owners, the health of the pet is significantly undermined. Quality treatment requires serious material costs. When organizing a resting place for a dog and forming the conditions for keeping and caring for it as a whole, once again think about what consequences your desire to save money may turn out to be.
Especially relevant is the issue of arranging a place for a dog in the autumn months, when the heating has not yet been turned on in the house, and drafts are frequent guests. Winter will come after autumn, and during the cold months, the dog will need strong immunity to resist colds and other diseases.
Street dogs and the wild ancestors of dogs in nature, of course, do fine without beds, but do not forget that they are accustomed to harsh living conditions from childhood. In addition, their life expectancy is significantly less than that of pets. Housing conditions leave their mark on the body. And the unfavorable ecology of big cities has a negative impact not only on us, but also on our four-legged friends. That is why, in matters of domestic content, it is important to take into account the needs of the domestic dog, and not identify it with wild relatives.
So, beds are necessary for everyone, even the largest dogs, as they:
protect the dog from drafts and, consequently, colds;
prevent cystitis;
prevent diseases of the musculoskeletal system and joints, the most common of which is arthrosis;
prevent the formation of elbow calluses, which will inevitably appear in a dog sleeping on a bare floor or a thin rug;
the bed is peace, comfort and high-quality rest for your dog, which he undoubtedly deserves.
In any modern pet store you will find a wide range of different beds for miniature, medium and large dogs. When choosing a particular model, pay attention to the quality of the material and seams, as well as the admissibility of machine washing. Of course, the couch will get dirty, and its condition will need to be monitored. Machine washing in this regard will greatly simplify the task and allow you to save time.
- The quality of the material determines how long the bed will last and how comfortable it will be for your pet. If the dog is prone to allergies, choose models made of hypoallergenic material for it.
- The shape of the bed depends on the size and individual preferences of your pet. Observe what position your dog sleeps in most often? If she sleeps curled up, she will be comfortable on a round or oval bed. If the pet sleeps stretched out to its full length, a rectangular bed is more suitable for him.
Many pets really like beds with sides. It is convenient to put a muzzle on the sides. The dog seems to plunge into such a bed, it is very comfortable and warm in it, because the sides protect from drafts.
For puppies recently weaned from their mother, ultra-soft double-sided beds are ideal. The soft, pleasant surface and large sides create a comfortable environment for babies and allow them to feel warm and safe, as if they were next to their mother. Such beds significantly reduce stress and facilitate the adaptation of puppies to a new independent life.
- Miniature dogs, especially representatives of hairless breeds, simply adore bed-houses. The houses provide maximum heat retention and become a real reliable mink for fragile pets.
The variety of shapes and colors of modern beds make it easy to choose a model that will be a spectacular addition to your interior.
Stay healthy and take care of your pets!
