Which dog to start with: small or large?

Often people who decide to get a four-legged friend ask themselves the question – which dog to choose: large or small? Yielding to false conclusions and prejudices, as the first dog, the newly minted owners choose a small breed and make a big mistake. Let’s figure out what parameters you really need to choose your pet.

Most often, dog lovers immediately know what breed they like. But some people may experience serious difficulties and rush between a large and a small dog. Chihuahua, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian – this is who, in most cases, beginner dog breeders stop at.

There is an obvious stereotype on the face: supposedly a small dog gives less trouble, it needs less time and attention. And yes, it doesn’t need to be trained. Such erroneous beliefs can lead to irreparable consequences.

Everything is individual, and a small dog does not equal small problems. Sometimes even a Jack Russell Terrier is more troublesome than a big Great Dane.

If you are already choosing a four-legged companion, then it is important to take into account, first of all, temperament, character, activity level and goals: why do you get a dog.

Which dog to start with: small or large?

Let us consider in more detail what parameters should be considered before choosing a breed.

  • Education.

If someone once told you that small dogs do not need education and training, forget it immediately! Absolutely any dog, regardless of size, needs your attention and time. Of course, a naughty and aggressive dog of a large breed can do a lot of trouble and even cause significant harm to people. But an ill-mannered baby is also a “headache” and problems.

Therefore, remember that you will have to devote time to your pet in any case, no matter what size it is.

  • Living conditions.

It is believed that any large dog needs space, and small breeds can easily while away their lives in the “odnushka”. But it’s not.

Indeed, there are large pets that do not belong in an apartment. These are driving, working and shepherd breeds: Husky, Malamute, Bernese Mountain Dog. Also in a city apartment it will be crowded with especially large comrades: Alabai, Leonberger, St. Bernard. There are rather big dogs that feel fine in apartment conditions, but with frequent and long walks: German Shepherd, Retriever, Labrador and others. But as for small and medium breeds, not every such dog will be happy to live “in cramped conditions and not offended.” These are, for example, the famous Jack Russell “motors”. Although the breed is small, its energy is enough for an entire army.

The same goes for corgis. Initially, these royal dogs were used as shepherds, so the love of movement and games is in their blood. Lack of proper education and physical activity – and instead of a cute dog, you will get an uncontrollable manipulator.

  • Character.

Everything is simple here: if you lead an active lifestyle, like to travel and be in big companies, then choose a dog that fully shares your interests. It could be the previously mentioned Jack Russell Terrier. Or a golden retriever – a real darling and extrovert. With the Border Collie, one of the smartest dogs, you won’t get bored either.

Quiet and introverts can also find a four-legged companion. A pug is perfect for this role – a compact, sturdy man who becomes attached to one owner and can easily spend the whole day on the couch.

Owners of a country house and lovers of a secluded lifestyle will perfectly suit the good-natured Newfoundland giant. This dog is not intrusive, does not strive for large companies of people, but loves his person with all his heart.

  • Family circumstances

Don’t discount your personal life when choosing a breed. So, if you have small children, it is important to consider the temperament of the dog, not its size. For example, a seemingly formidable boxer perfectly copes with the duties of a nanny. But a baby chihuahua can be jealous of a beloved owner for a child and treat the baby with hostility.

Bachelors and single people should choose a breed that feels great next to one person and does not need a large family. This, for example, is a King Charles Spaniel, which is attached to one owner and will follow him everywhere.

  • Large dogs should go to responsible, understanding, strict, but kind owners. Because a large breed that was raised incorrectly can become a real weapon in the hands of an inadequate person.

  • A small and medium dog can also cause trouble, although not as serious as, for example, a Rottweiler or a pit bull.

Do not forget that any dog requires financial expenses. Often, dogs suffer from diseases characteristic of a particular breed, acquire ailments throughout their lives and become completely helpless in old age. But you still need to buy food, toys, medicines and much more.

If you are not ready for the time and money investment in your large or small pet, then it is better not to get a dog at all.
